White Pinot Noir sounds like an oxymoron – a white wine made from red grapes – but with a bit of skilled winemaking slight of hand, the result is rich white wine with a different flavor profile than its more common red counterpart.

Think of it as the base that red Pinot Noir is built on.

How is White Pinot Noir Made?

Red wine is made from red grapes, and it is the skin that provides the color, not the juice. The vast majority of wine grapes have white flesh. The color is imparted by allowing the skins to soak in the juice.

White wine is made from red grapes by loading the grapes directly into the press without crushing them. While there are many ways to press grapes, a very, very broad generalization is to think of a perforated can with a deflated balloon inside. The grapes are placed into the can, and the balloon is inflated. The grapes are pressed against the can, and the juice flows out of the perforated can with only minimal contact with the skins. Ta Da! White juice from red grapes!

Pinot Noir is well suited to this process because the grapes have especially thin skin.

In vintages with abundant wildfires (such as 2020 in Oregon, 2021 in British Columbia), winemakers may opt to make white pinot noir rather than let the wine absorb smoke taint from the skins.

White Pinot Noir juice is often used to make white sparkling wine. Champagne uses Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and another red grape, Pinot Meunier.

Once separated from the grape skins, the juice is then fermented, usually in a temperature controlled environment. It might be fermented in new oak barrels to impart some flavors from the oak, it might be fermented in a neutral barrel to impart a fuller mouthfeel, or it might be fermented in a stainless steel tank to showcase the crisp flavors of the fruit. A winemaker might even ferment some juice in a variety of vessels and then blend the wines after fermentation is complete.

White Pinot Noir Characteristics

Since the skins do not factor into the production of White Pinot Noir, the flavors will be different than the more familiar red counterpart – think of some of your favorite rich white wines.

Pinot Noir grapes have higher acidity than many white grapes, and the acidity in the wine will make your mouth water. Since the skins do not factor into the production of White Pinot Noir, the wine will have low tannins.

The wine will have dominant white wine flavors of apple & pears (baked, not crisp & fresh) with some citrus (think lemon and orange) accents. It’s a great picnic wine – rich, but not heavy.

You might say it has the acidity of Albarino with the fuller body of Verdejo, if you’ve ever had those wines.

Where is White Pinot Noir Produced?

Since White Pinot Noir is made from Pinot Noir grapes, it can be made anywhere those grapes are grown. In the New World, Oregon and California, Australia and New Zealand, and also Chile. In Europe, Pinot Noir grows in France’s Burgundy, Loire Valley, Champagne and Alsace regions, with additional plantings in Italy and Germany.

In France, it might be called Pinot Noir Blanc or Pinot d’Alsace, but the latter is often a blend of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Auxerrois.

Don’t get lazy and refer to it as “Pinot Blanc,” because that’s another grape entirely!

In Italy, it might be called “Pinot Nero Bianco”, in Germany it might be called Blanc de Noir Spätburgunder.

Food Pairings with White Pinot Noir

White Pinot Noir pairs well with lighter dishes that have a rich, round character. Think fish, pâtés, or lightly seasoned poultry or pork. It works well with creamy or buttery sauces as well.

If you are looking for plant-based pairings, try something earthy with a sweet, nutty undertone. Think roasted corn, sunchokes, butternut squash, parsnips, or burdock root.

Mushrooms, dijon mustard, and roasted onions are some good ingredients to incorporate to create a dish that pairs well with White Pinot Noir.

You could also try almonds or a dash of honey. Or both!

White Pinot Noir Serving Temperature

As with many white wines, White Pinot Noir shines when slightly chilled, but not extremely cold. Aim for 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit by putting the bottle in your refrigerator and taking it out half an hour before serving.

White Pinot Noir might be difficult to wrap your head around, and may not be easy to find, but is more than a curiosity. It’s a way to get wine out of a tricky to grow grape in difficult vintages, but more importantly, it’s a rich, food-friendly wine that rewards your search with delicious flavors, great acidity, and an interesting story.

And if you find some White Pinot Noir, it’s a good excuse to have a picnic!

Introduction

Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio are two popular types of wine that are often compared to one another.

Have you ever been out to dinner with friends and faced the conundrum of choosing between a glass of Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio?

While it may seem like an easy choice, there’s actually a lot more to explore when it comes to these two types of wines. And if you’re not sure what each tastes like – or when is the appropriate time to partake of each one – this post will help!

From their respective regions to the grapes that make up each type, we are going to break down all there is to know about the differences between Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio.

Pinot Noir Vs Pinot Grigio Grape Differences

Before we start, it is important to note that Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris is the same grape variety, known by a different name in various countries.

While Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio both come from the same family of the Pinot grapes, they have distinct differences in terms of taste, appearance, and origin.

Both grapes come from the Burgundian family Pinot and belong to the Vitis vinifera species, but Pinot Noir is a red wine grape variety whereas Pinot Grigio is a white wine grape variety.

However, here’s a shocker for you: Pinot Grigio grapes and Pinot Noir grapes are color mutations of the same grape, so they do have something in common.

While growing on the vine, both of them form pine cone-like clusters, which is actually what lead to these wine grapes being called Pinot (French for pine cone).

The color of the Pinot Noir grape is dark blue, while the color of the Pinot Grigio grape is grayish, and when ripe it even gets a pinkish hue.

Pinot Noir Vs Pinot Grigio Flavor Profile Differences

The most obvious difference between these two wines is their color. Pinot Noir is a light and nearly clear red wine, whereas Pinot Grigio looks light gold and it is typically a white wine, and although very rarely, there are Rosé Pinot Grigio wines.

Another important distinction between Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio is their flavor profile.

Pinot Noir tasting characteristics

Pinot Noir is an elegant and delicate wine, known for its light body, low tannins, and smooth texture. It is fruit-forward with well-balanced acidity, with notes of cherry and raspberry, and when grown in cool climates earthy and mushroomy flavors.

Pinot Grigio tasting characteristics

On the other hand, Pinot Grigio is a dry, crisp and refreshing white wine that has subtle green fruit flavors and a light body. It has no tannins, and its fruit flavors typically include green apple, pear, and lime.

In terms of alcohol content, Pinot Noir typically has an ABV of 11.5-14.5%, while Pinot Grigio wine usually has an ABV of 10-13.5%.

Pinot Noir Vs Pinot Grigio Region differences

When it comes to regions of origin, both Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio are native to France, yet they thrive very well in various regions around the world.

Where is Pinot Noir Grown

Pinot Noir is a very difficult grape to cultivate, due to its thin skin and predisposition to different diseases.

Pinot Noir grapes have been grown for centuries in France, where they actually originate from.

Burgundy and Oregon are known for producing stunning Pinot Noirs, and some other regions famous for producing great Pinot Noir wines are California, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Germany, and Chile.

Where is Pinot Grigio Grown

This variety is native to France where it is known as Pinot Gris, grown vastly in the Alsace region, which is the region where the best bottles of this wine come from. Despite that, most people associate Pinot Grigio with Italy.

The grape was brought and first grown in the Mediterranean country in the second half of the 20th century, where it gained tremendous popularity.

Other popular regions for Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris grapes are California, Oregon, Argentina, Chile, and many others.

Both types of wines can be very distinct depending on their region of origin, and a sommelier can usually guess where they came from with just a sip.

Food Pairings

When it comes to food pairings, both are versatile wines and are known as great food companions.

Pinot Noir pairings

Due to its light body and soft tannins, Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with lean meats, pasta, and fatty fish. There is enough refreshing acidity to cut through the heaviness of foods and one can even expand further and match it with grilled lamb chops, or roasted .

Pinot Grigio pairings

The crisp acidity and the citrus flavors of Pinot Grigio make it a great companion to any salads, creamy meals, or light seafood dishes.

Pinot Noir Vs Pinot Grigio Pricing What Are The Differences

Although it might sound snobbish, it is a known fact among wine drinkers that red wines in general can be much pricier than white wines, especially if we are talking about an aged Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir pricing

The demanding nature of the Pinot Noir grape results in a smaller production scale, which along with the aging process leads to a higher price for the final product.

Although their best samples hold the title for being some of the most expensive red wines in the world, there are fairly decent Pinot Noir wines that don’t cost a fortune.

A good Pinot Noir can cost anywhere from $20 to $100 per bottle.

Pinot Grigio pricing

Pinot Grigio is usually produced in larger quantities and it has a shorter production process compared to Pinot Noir, which results in a lower final cost.

Although there are bottles that go for more than 100$, it is easy to find good Pinot Grigio wines in the mid-priced range between 15$ to 35$.

Conclusion

Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir offer two distinct flavor profiles that appeal to different palates. The grapes also have different regions of origin and a range of price points depending on their level of quality.

Overall, while there may be some similarities between these two types of wines, they are ultimately very different in terms of flavor, origin, and food pairing.

It is important to consider these differences when deciding which wine to pick for your next meal.

Pinot Grigio’s light and refreshing taste may make it ideal for summer get-togethers, while Pinot Noir offers an elegant and complex flavor, that goes very well with a wide variety of food, as well as on its own.

So keep these key factors in mind when selecting your next bottle—and enjoy! (1)

Pinot Grigio vs Pinot Noir FAQ

What is the difference between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir is a red wine that is known for its rich, fruity flavor and smooth finish, while Pinot Grigio is a white wine that is characterized by its crisp, dry taste and light body.

Which is sweeter Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio?

Both wines fall under the dry wines category. The reason why they taste sweet to some people is the fruit-forward profile of the wines.

Are Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir the same grape?

They are both mutations of the Pinot grape family, but NO, Pinot Noir is a dark-skinned grape that produces mostly red wines, while Pinot Grigio is a grayish-blue color grape that is famous for the white wines it produces.

Introduction

Choosing the right red wine to use for cooking can have a great impact on the flavor and aroma of a dish. When selecting a wine for cooking, it is important to consider the intensity of flavor, acidity level, and whether the wine will complement or contrast the ingredients used in the recipe. (1)

Additionally, it is always recommended to use a wine that you would also drink, as a bad-tasting wine will remain like that even after the cooking process, and in the end, you might be left with a dish with an undesirable taste.

Bearing all this in mind, you can choose a red wine that will elevate your plate to the next level.

Pinot Noir is a light red wine with subtle flavors of sweet cherries, berries, and earthy notes, making it a popular choice when it comes to using it for cooking.

Ideas for cooking with Pinot Noir

Here are some ideas on how to use Pinot Noir for cooking:

1. Using Pinot Noir in sauces:

Pinot Noir’s subtle flavors can add depth and complexity to sauces, making it a great addition to dishes like steak and mushrooms, roasted meats, and pasta.

To make a Pinot Noir sauce, start by sautéing onions and garlic, then adding Pinot Noir and reducing it by half. Add in any other ingredients your dish requires, such as herbs, spices, or broth, and continue to cook until the sauce thickens. Bear in mind, you should not put too much wine in the sauce as the wine’s flavors will concentrate and overpower your dish.

2. Braising with Pinot Noir

Braising is a method for tenderizing where meat is slowly cooked in a liquid, allowing it to become tender and infused with flavors.

Pinot Noir is a great choice for braising, as it adds a rich and nuanced flavor to dishes like braised beef or lamb.

To braise with Pinot Noir, start by browning the meat, then add in the wine and any other ingredients, such as vegetables, herbs, and spices. Cover the dish and cook over low heat until the meat is tender.

3. Cooking with Pinot Noir in stews:

Pinot Noir can also be used to add richness and complexity to any kind of stew.

The wine’s fruity and earthy notes pair well with ingredients like mushrooms, carrots, and onions.

To use Pinot Noir in stews, add it near the end of the cooking process, allowing it to merge with the other flavors in the dish.

Best Pinot Noir for cooking:

The Pinot Noir you choose specifically for cooking does not have to cost hundreds of dollars, but in order to enhance the flavors of your food, it should be a decent wine that you can enjoy a glass of with your dish, once the cooking is done.

Let’s look at our top choices:

1. Conscious Pinot Noir

5. Trader Joe’s Pinot Noir Reserve

Trader Joe’s Pinot Noirs are usually inexpensive wines, however, there are many great options that can be used both as cooking wines and as dinner wines. TJ’s Reserve Pinot Noir is a medium-body red wine, with a fruit-forward profile and balanced acidity.

Some good cooking suggestions for this wine would be infusing it into ratatouille, beef stews, and any mushroom-based sauces.

At just 10$ per bottle, this Pinot Noir is a great red wine for cooking.

Conclusion:

The average price for this Martin Ray wine is between 17-21$.

Conclusion

With so many good Pinot Noir wines available in the supermarket network, it can be overwhelming to choose the right wine, especially when you don’t know what to be on the lookout for.

Introduction

Burgundy is a prestigious region in Northeastern France, renowned globally for its excellent wine and grape varieties.

The wine-making traditions of Burgundy are steeped in history, tracing all the way back to the French revolution. The red wines from Burgundy are some of the most well known in the world. The Burgundy region is a must visit destination for fine wine lovers seeking to indulge in some of the finest varieties.

It is important to note that when discussing white wines from Burgundy, one can only be referring to the Chardonnay grape, while the red wines are exclusively made from Pinot Noir. When it comes to Pinot Noir, Burgundy is the most important producer of Pinot Noir in France.

The unique terroir of Burgundy, with its limestone and clay soils and its cool climate, creates the perfect conditions for Pinot Noir grapes to reach their full potential, resulting in wines of unparalleled complexity, elegance, and depth of flavor. (1)

Understanding Burgundy Wine Classification

Apart from being the most demanding region in France for cultivating grapes, Burgundy is also one of the most complex wine regions in the world and therefore, quite difficult to understand.

The Burgundy region is divided into 4 major sub-regions:

Chablis (white wine)

Côte d’Or (red and white wine, main Pinot Noir region)

Côte Chalonnaise (red and white wine, second Pinot Noir region)

Mâconnais (white wine)

*From a geographical perspective, Beaujolais is also a part of Burgundy but is considered a wine region on its own, distinct from the rest of Burgundy wine.

Burgundy wines are categorized into four classes, ranging from the most basic, inexpensive wines to the most refined and costly:

Burgundy Red And White

Village Wine

Premier Cru

Grand Cru

Burgundy Red And White

In France, Bourgogne Rouge and Bourgogne Blanc are known as basic wines from Burgundy, typically made by blending the same grape varieties grown anywhere in the region.

Bourgogne Rouge may lack the specific environmental characteristics that Burgundy is revered for, but they do produce wines that contribute to a fundamental regional identity.

Village Wine

From this moment forward, the wines of Burgundy become incredibly notable. The grapes sourced to make village wines come solely from the village and its surrounding areas.

Village wines are of higher quality and at a higher cost than regional wines, as the grapes come from a more specific, smaller area.

Labels of the wine typically feature the name of the village such as Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Chambolle-Musigny, Meursault, Nuits-St.-Georges, and so on.

Premier Cru

In 1861, the most renowned vineyards of Burgundy were classified as Premier Cru or even higher – as Grand Cru wines. Premier Cru translates to “first growth” and indicates the superior terroir of a vineyard. A total of 629 vineyards in the region of Burgundy have been classified as Premier Cru.

Premier Cru wines are always on the more expensive side, and these wines always have the name of the vineyard on the label after the village’s name e.g. Beaune “Clos de la Mousse” or Gevrey-Chambertin “Aux Combottes.”

From all the wines produced in Burgundy France, 10% is composed of Premier Cru wines.

Grand Cru

Grand Cru (French for Great Growth) is the highest level of classification for a Burgundy vineyard, and wines from these vineyards are typically considered the most honored as well as pricey in Burgundy along with being some of the most expensive wines in the world. Grand Cru represents only 1 percent of the Burgundy wine.

32 out of 33 Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy are from Côte d’Or, and one is located in Chablis.

Only 2% of Burgundy’s wines come from the vineyards of Grand Cru.

Burgundy Pinot Noir

As we’ve mentioned before, a red Burgundy wine is always made of 100 % Pinot Noir, and never blended.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir’s main production is located in two main regions, Côte d’Or and and Côte Chalonnaise.

Côte d’Or

The most well-known wine district in Burgundy is Côte d’Or which is a long, thin ridge made up of limestone split nearly in half.

Out of the 33 Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, 32 are located in The Côte d’Or, and 1 in Chablis.

The northern region, known as Côte de Nuits, produces only red Pinot Noir wines. The southern region, the Côte de Beaune, is known for both red and white wines, with white wines like Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet being particularly famous.

Côte d’Or villages are all said to have their own distinct characteristics. Generally, the top Pinot Noir wines from Côte de Nuits are more intense and have a stronger structure than Pinot Noirs from Côte de Beaune, which are softer.

Côte d’Or Pinot Noirs are well-known for their earthy flavors, accompanied by notes of spices, mushrooms, and licorice.

Some of the most notable producing villages in the region are Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, and Vougeot.

Côte Chalonnaise

A few miles south sits the subregion of Côte Chalonnaise, the second major wine-producing region in Burgundy. Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are produced there, with no Grand Cru villages in the region, yet the region has many Premier Cru wines.

The Côte Chalonnaise wines are often less expensive than the wines of the Côte d’Or, making it the perfect region for wine lovers exploring Burgundy on a budget.

Some of the most sought after wines come from Mercurey, the most well-known and largest village in the area, is known for producing high-quality Pinot Noir wine with a strong spicy cherry flavor.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

When it comes to Burgundy wine, one you simply must know is Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Perhaps the most recognized and high-priced wines in the world come from this producer.

The estate consists of seven vineyards, all of which are Grand Crus, and all vineyards are located in and around the village of Vosne-Romanée. 6 of the vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir, and one with Chardonnay.

There are only 6000 bottles of DRC’s wines produced annually.

In October 2018, two bottles of 1945 vintage Romanée Conti were sold for $558,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.

New World Pinot Noir vs Burgundy Pinot Noir

What makes the difference between Burgundy Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir that is grown in the rest of the world is the TERROIR, which primarily refers to the region and its characteristics.

The specific type of the soil in Burgundy, the position of the slopes, and the cool climate are the main factors that influence the Burgundy Terroir.

The cool climate in Burgundy allows the grapes to ripen slowly over a long period of time, and as a result, the grapes produce wines that possess finesse, nuance, and complexity.

Are you trying to decide whether to have a Merlot vs Pinot Noir tonight?

When it comes to red wine, two grape varieties that are sure to trigger a debate among wine connoisseurs are Merlot and Pinot Noir.

In this article, we will explain the difference between Merlot and Pinot Noir and discover why they continue to captivate the hearts and palates of wine enthusiasts around the world.

Merlot vs Pinot Noir

While they share some similarities, such as their rich and complex flavors, they also possess distinct characteristics that set them apart.

1. Region of Origin

Merlot and Pinot Noir are two of the most planted grapes in France, where they actually originate from.

The Merlot grape is native to the region of Bordeaux, and along with Cabernet Sauvignon, it is the most important grape grown there. (1)

To produce a red Bordeaux, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are always blended with other grape varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Malbec, and sometimes Carménère.

Burgundy is considered to be the home of the Pinot Noir grape, which is the main grape variety used in the production of red Burgundy wines. Cote d’Or is one of the most famous regions for growing Pinot Noir in Burgundy, producing some of the finest wines in the world.

2. Terroir

Merlot thrives well in almost every region around the world, with the most popular being France, Italy, California, Chile, and Australia.

Merlot grapes thrive in almost all kinds of soil types, however, they prefer well-drained soils, rich in clay and limestone. It grows very well in warm and cool climates.

On the other hand, Pinot Noir grapes are much pickier about the terroir. The ideal conditions for growing this grape are a cool climate with a decent amount of sunshine, and thin rocky soils.

Burgundy and Oregon have the perfect conditions for growing Pinot Noir, but despite that Pinot Noir is grown in many other regions around the world, such as France, Italy, Germany, California, New Zealand, Australia, and Chile.

3. Taste Profile

On the wine scale, Merlot sits somewhere in the middle, as a medium-bodied red wine, with smooth tannins, and low and balanced acidity.

Cool climate-produced Merlot wines usually tend to be more earthy, with expressed flavors of plum, blackberries, cherries, and sometimes tobacco and chocolate when barrel aged.

Warm climate Merlot is generally higher in alcohol content, and predominant flavors of ripe plum, black raspberry, cherry, and red currant.

Pinot Noir wine is at the bottom of the wine scale, as one of the lightest wines. Low in tannin content, Pinot Noir is well known for its food-friendly acidity.

Just as with any other wine, Pinot Noir taste profile is determined by the region where it comes from.
Cool climate Pinot Noir tends to be more earthy and floral, with flavors of cherries, mushrooms, and plums.

Warm climate Pinot Noir is a fruity red wine, with expressed notes of sweet cherries, raspberries, and wild strawberries.

4. Sweetness levels

The difference between Merlot and Pinot Noir sweetness is the amount of residual sugar left in the wines after fermentation.

Merlot and Pinot Noir are dry red wines with a sugar content of 1-3 %, depending on the region where they come from, and the style of the winemaker.

Both Pinot Noir and Merlot, when grown in a cooler climate taste drier and earthier, while their warmer climate counterparts taste fruitier and sweeter.

5. Food Pairings

When it comes to choosing a wine to go with a meal, Merlot is a medium to full-bodied red wine that will make a great companion to hearty meats such as beef, pork, lamb, and game, as well as strong cheeses such as gorgonzola or cheddar. Learn more about Merlot pairings.

Pinot Noir is light and delicate red wine, which will best pair with light dishes such as poultry, mushroom-based pasta, and even high-fat fish like grilled salmon and tuna, as well as light cheeses such as Comte, Brie, or Taleggio.

6. Potential to age

Both wines have the potential to age really well. There are Merlot-based Bordeaux wines, such as Chateaux Petrus that are older than 25 years.

Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy also get better with age, and some of them can be found to be 15 to 20+ years old.

Despite that, New World Pinot Noir is usually consumed young and rarely aged, typically within 5 years of production, and the reason behind that is the low tannin content.

7. Wine Glass

There are different wine glass shapes for each of these wines that help them enhance their best aromas and flavors.

Merlot should be enjoyed out of a Bordeaux wine glass, which is specifically designed for heavier reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Barolo, or Petite Syrah.

Pinot Noir tastes amazing in a Burgundy wine glass, which is designed with a wide bowl in order to preserve the flavors of this elegant and delicate wine, and a narrow opening that serves to concentrate all those aromas and flavors on the nose.

8. Prices

Both Merlot and Pinot Noir wines have representatives that are among the most expensive wines in the world.

A bottle of Merlot-based Bordeaux could cost 50 000 $ and more, while there are Pinot Noirs such as Romanee-Conti that are priced at more than 100 000 $.

Due to the difficulty of growing Pinot Noir grapes, and the versatility of Merlot grapes, Pinot Noir wines could be slightly more expensive.

Conclusion

An interesting fact to mention when comparing Merlot vs Pinot Noir is the famous movie from 2004 “Sideways” which had a significant impact on the wine industry.

Both Merlot and Pinot Noir experienced drastic ups and downs in sales and popularity.

In the film, one of the main actors expresses his sympathies for Pinot Noir and disrespect for Merlot wine.
That same year, following the “Sideways effect”, Merlot sales in the United States dropped by 5.5 %, while Pinot Noir sales increased by 16%.

The difference between Pinot Noir and Merlot is huge, and while somebody might prefer one, there will always be people that prefer the other.

Both wines are produced from noble grape varieties and are considered some of the best in the world by many wine experts.

Pinot Noir is famous for its difficulty to grow, yet it is grown in many wine regions all around the world, and the taste of the wine it produces makes it worth all the effort.

As a Pinot lover, you must be aware that there are different sorts of Pinot wines, and most of them have French names whose meaning is unknown to the majority of us. Knowing the etymology of their names and how they got them in the first place, can help every wine lover appreciate wine even more.

Let’s dive into the matter, and try to explain it in the most entertaining way:

How to pronounce Pinot Noir?

The correct pronunciation of Pinot Noir is “Pee-Noh-Nwar”. Let’s break it down and learn how to pronounce Pinot Noir like a real wine sommelier:

As we mentioned earlier, there are two words, “Pinot” is pronounced “pee-noh” and “Noir” is pronounced “nwahr”.

Practicing by saying each word of Pinot Noir separately will make things much easier. Once you feel confident about it, start combining the two words together.

The accent comes on the first syllable of “pinot” and the second syllable of “noir”.

Recommended read: 5 Differences Between Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon

What Does Pinot Noir Mean?

There is a story behind the meaning of all Pinot wines, and while all of them are pronounced differently around the world, we are still talking about the same grape varieties.

The translation of Pinot Noir in french is “black pine cone”.

Pinot Meaning

The word “Pinot” is derived from the French term for “pine cone”, which depicts the shape of the grape clusters.

Unlike other varieties, when growing on the vines the Pinot grapes form tight clusters, making a pine cone-like shape.

Noir Meaning

The word “Noir” is another French word that means “black”, referring to the dark color of the Pinot Noir grapes.

Pinot Noir grapes are small, with a dark color and thin skin..

Meaning and pronounciation of other Pinot wines

Getting a little further into enology, we’ll learn that all of the Pinot grapes are somehow connected, and come from the same family.

Pinot Noir is the only grape from the “Pinot family” that produces red wine, while the rest of the varieties are typically used to make white wine.

Pinot Gris

The name Pinot Gris translates as “gray pine cone” in french. It is thought that the name comes from the grayish color of the grapes when they are fully ripe.

The french way to pronounce it is: “pee-noh gree”

Pinot Blanc

The name Pinot Blanc is derived from the light color of the grapes, with Blanc meaning white in French.

The correct pronounciation of Pinot Blanc is: “pee-noh blongk“.

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is the Italian version of the French Pinot Gris, with the adjective “Grigio” meaning gray in Italian.

The proper pronounciation of Pinot Grigio is: “pee-noh gri-jee-ow”.

Pinot Noir wine can be found under different names in many countries, but it is actually the same wine.

For example, in Italy, it is called “Pinot Nero”, while in Germany it is known under the name of Spatburgunder owing its name to the region of Burgundy a.k.a the home of Pinot Noir.(1)

Originally from Burgundy, France, the Pinot Noir grapes are grown in many regions around the world.

Pinot Noir (pronounced “Pee-Noh-Nwar”) is typically a light-bodied red wine with a delicate and fruity character. It can be consumed on its own, but when it comes to food pairing, it is probably the most versatile red wine.

Best Appetizers to Pair with Pinot Noir Red Wines

Due to its elegant flavors and light body, Pinot Noir pairs very well with a wide variety of appetizers.

Charcuterie Board

Pinot Noir cheese pairing is a gastronomic orgasm when done properly. Pairing Pinot Noir with light cheese is a great complementary pairing, and at the same time, the moderate tannins and acidity of Pinot Noir match beautifully with the rich flavors of ham, prosciutto, salami, or mortadella.

When pairing your Pinot Noir with cheese, it’s essential to present it on a high-end charcuterie board. Why showcase such exquisite food on an unattractive platter when a beautiful charcuterie board can elevate the entire experience.

Vegetable Dips with Bread

Pinot Noir pairs very well with a variety of vegetable dips, due to its delicate earthy flavors. The creaminess and nutty flavors of dips such as Hummus make a great pairing, matching well with the acidity and subtle fruitiness of this red wine.

Beside Hummus, some other popular dips to pair with Pinot Noir are:

Baba Ghanoush

Artichoke dip

Spinach and feta dip

Tuna Tartare

Tuna Tartare is an excellent choice to pair with Pinot Noir. The light gentle flavor profile of Pinot Noir is an ideal complement to the delicate Tuna Tartare. The acidity of Pinot Noir helps balance out the rich flavors of the tuna fish.

Pizza

Pizza goes very well with Pinot Noir, mostly because of the light Mozzarella cheese and the red marinara sauce. When it comes to pairing Pinot Noir with pizza, there are certain toppings that contribute to a perfect match:

mushrooms

eggplant

prosciutto

onions

Grilled Vegetables

The light character of Pinot Noir wine makes it the perfect companion to starters like grilled veggies, such as eggplant, mushrooms, zucchini, or bell peppers. It’s a perfect match, as the taste of the vegetables helps bring out the pleasant fruitiness of Pinot Noir.

Great Main Courses to Pair with Pinot Noir Red Wines

Despite being a red wine, Pinot Noir is an excellent choice for pairing with light main course dishes like poultry and certain fish. Additionally, its acidity and tannins make it a suitable match for rich and hearty foods such as pork or lamb.

Based on our expertise, various Pinot Noir food pairings to consider include grilled salmon, duck breast, mushroom risotto or pasta, or even grilled lamb chops or pork tenderloin.

Mushroom Risotto

Oregon Pinot Noir or Burgundy would make a great companion for this light vegetarian dish. The earthy flavors of Pinot Noir would ideally complement the mushrooms, and the bright acidity of the wine will cut through the creaminess of the risotto and bring a refreshing taste to the palate.

Some classic pairings would be adding mushrooms to any dish, and your taste buds will thank you.

Grilled Salmon

While it is a common belief that fish pairs best with white wine and meat with red wine, this situation presents an exception.

Along with Tuna, salmon is the highest in fat fish, therefore it requires a light red such as Pinot Noir, in order to balance the protein and the rich flavors of the fish. Any pasta or sushi with salmon will also make a perfect match for Pinot Noir.

Grilled Tuna steak

Just like Salmon, Tuna is a fatty fish, which might have an overpowering effect on some white wines. For that reason, it is best paired with red wine, particularly Pinot Noir, to balance the protein of the fish with the help of the low tannin content of the wine.

Duck Breast

The rich, gamey flavor of duck is another great complement to a delicate red such as Pinot Noir. These two pair very well together, especially when the duck is cooked in a fruit sauce, such as a berry one, allowing the fruity flavors of Pinot Noir to come forward and express heavenly notes on the palate.

Pork Tenderloin

New World Pinot Noirs such as California or Chile, match perfectly with pork tenderloin. Those Pinot Noir wines are typically richer in body and alcohol content than their counterparts from Europe and Oregon, and can easily balance the mild and slightly sweet flavors of Pork tenderloin.

Grilled Lamb Chops

The earthy flavors of lamb chops make a divine complement to the earthy notes of red Burgundy or Oregon Pinot Noir. The bright acidity of the Pinot Noir wine acts refreshingly on the palate during contact with the rustic flavors of lamb chops.

This is my favorite wine and food pairing with Pinot Noir, it is a match made in heaven.

Desserts to Pair with Pinot Noir Red Wines

The best wines to pair with sweet desserts are sweet wines, as the sweetness of the wine complements the sweetness of the food without canceling each other.

But there are some desserts that could go well with dry Pinot Noir wines:

Mascarpone with Berries

The fruit-forward profile of Pinot Noir would be an ideal match for the berries mixed with mascarpone cheese. It is probably the easiest and lowest in calories dessert to make at home.

Dark Chocolate with Strawberries

Dark chocolate tends to be less sweet than other chocolates, and when paired with strawberries, it will create a delightful pairing, making it a perfect after-dinner treat. Alternatively, you can use dark chocolate to make a brownie, which will also be a great companion to your Pinot Noir.

What to Avoid Pairing with Pinot Noir Red Wines

As with any red wine, there are some foods that need to be avoided with Pinot Noir wine. Some of those include:

Excessively sweet food and desserts

Spicy food

High-fat steaks and meats

The excessive sweetness of food will make Pinot Noir taste tart and acidic, and therefore, it should be avoided in Pinot Noir wine pairings.

Spicy foods, such as Asian cuisine or certain Mexican dishes, should not be paired with Pinot Noir or other red wines. Instead, they are better complemented by sweet white wines like German Riesling or Moscato d’Asti.

The delicate body and nature of Pinot Noir wine make it a bad companion to heavy foods such as Prime Rib and other rich meats, as the high fat and protein content of the food overwhelms the light character of Pinot Noir, and make it taste off-flavored. This kind of high-fat food should be paired with a full-bodied red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir Food Pairing Techniques for a Perfect Wine Pairing

Pinot Noir food and wine pairing can be done in two ways – complementary and contrasting.

Complementary pairings are matching the light body of the wine with a light dish, while contrasting means pairing it with food richer in flavors and thus achieving a refreshing taste through the food-friendly balanced acidity of the Pinot Noir wine.(1)

To ensure a successful food pairing, it’s crucial to take into account the wine’s light body and the complexity of the food being matched with it.

Conclusion

If done correctly, Pinot Noir food pairings could be very enjoyable. At the end of the day, what works for somebody, might not suit you as well.

The most important part of wine pairing is finding the right balance of the food and the wine, without overwhelming one or another, or just follow pairing guide, and enjoy a mouthfeel from heaven.

Chilling Pinot Noir for half an hour before serving it will enhance its best flavors.

So, you love red Pinot Noir? Yeah, me too. But have you ever wondered if there’s a white version of it as well? Perhaps, even a rosé one? Or, you are just starting your journey in the fascinating, vast world of wines and you are curious to find out is Pinot Noir red or white wine.

Well, the answer is simple. Pinot Noir can be both a red and white wine. Although the major Pinot Noir production is in red wine, there is a white Pinot Noir as well. While it is not as popular as sparkling Pinot Noir and rosé Pinot Noir, white Pinot Noir is produced in many regions around the world.

Pinot Noir is one of the most popular and acclaimed grape varieties. It is known for its complex flavors and aromas. Have you ever wondered why “Pinot Noir”? It is named after the grape’s clusters of tightly packed, dark purple-colored fruits, strongly resembling a pinecone.

Pinot Noir Wines Around the World

France is considered to be the home of the Pinot Noir grape. Unlike Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in almost every wine country around the world, the Pinot Noir grape is very picky about the region where it grows. Some of the noteworthy wine regions to mention are:

Burgundy

Alsace

Loire Valley

Oregon

California

New Zealand

Germany

Italy

Pinot Noir grapes thrive in cooler climates with a long growing season, which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors while preserving their acidity.

Facts About Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the only grape variety permitted for producing red Burgundy wines.

The Pinot Noir taste is often characterized as dry, and at the same time, fruit-forward. It presents notes of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, earthy undertones, and a silky texture.

Pinot Noir is typically a light to medium-bodied red wine, with naturally high acidity, which gives the wine a refreshing, lively quality and helps to balance its fruitiness. The acidity level can also vary depending on the climate and soil conditions in which the grapes are grown.

Pinot Noir typically has an alcohol content ranging from 12% to 15%. The level is determined by the winemaker’s style and the region where the wine is produced.

When it comes to pairing food with Pinot Noir, it is probably the most versatile wine in the world. Despite being a red wine, Pinot Noir pairs very well with a variety of fish and seafood, such as salmon, tuna and lobster. At the same time, it makes a perfect companion to red meats, mushroom-based dishes and soft cheeses such as Camembert or Gruyère.

Because of its fruity nature, before serving Pinot Noir you should store it at a lower temperature than most other red wines. You can find out more about the best temperature to serve Pinot Noir here.

Origins of Pinot Noir Color: The Wine Making Process

First, you should know where the color of wine comes from. In winemaking, there is a process called “maceration” which is when the wine must (the pressed juice from the grapes mixed with water and yeast) gets in touch with the skin, seeds, and stems of the grapes.

Maceration involves soaking the remains of the grapes in the wine must for a specific amount of time, depending on the winemaker’s style, and the final goal of what the wine should be.

During the production of red wine, the skins of the grapes are left in touch with the wine must for a longer period, to reach the final red color. The process can last for several days, weeks, or sometimes, even months.

In fact, the duration that the skins are left in touch with the grape juice while fermenting defines the final color of Pinot Noir.

What Color is Pinot Noir?

The color of Pinot Noir can range from light ruby red to a deep purple red. The final color of Pinot Noir wine depends on factors such as:

Age of the wine

Region where the Pinot Noir grapes are grown

The style of the winemaker

How Does Age Influence the Color of Pinot Noir?

Aging the wine will change its color. The main reason behind that is the breakdown of pigments in the wine. White wines gain a darker color while aging red wines results in a lighter color of the final wine.

The barrels used for aging the wine also make a difference in the final color. New Oak barrels aging results in a deeper color of the wine in comparison with the wines aged in older barrels.

Aged Pinot Noir wine tends to be lighter in color than young Pinot Noir. (0)

The Effect of the Wine Region on the Final Pinot Noir Nuance

The type of soil and its condition also play a role in the wine color, as there are certain minerals and nutrients that can impact the color of Pinot Noir grapes. For example, soil that is rich in calcium produces grapes with thicker skin, and thicker skin means a deeper color.(1)

How Does the Winemaking Style Influence the Color of Pinot Noir?

The winemaking style and techniques can have a huge impact on the color of Pinot Noir wines. The most important are:

Blending

Blending thin skin grapes such as Pinot Noir with thicker skin grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot results in deeper color Pinot Noir wines.

The opposite applies if you add a small amount of Pinot Noir grapes to a Cabernet Sauvignon base blend, as it leads to the color slightly fading.

Filtration

Filtration is the process of filtrating the wine using several techniques, in order to reach wine clarity by removing the sediment and solid particles.

Heavily filtered wines may lose some of their color, flavors, and aroma.

Maceration

During maceration, the winemaker decides whether to produce a red, white, rosé, or sparkling Pinot Noir.

White Wine

At first glance, it might seem confusing how can red wine grapes produce white wine. White Pinot Noir is produced by fermenting the juice without the skin of the Pinot Noir grape.

White Pinot Noir wines are quite rare, but they are a very interesting style to taste. They tend to be heavier in body content than other white wines, mostly since they are made from red Pinot Noir grapes.

The color of white Pinot Noir wines can range from light gold to deep yellow.

One fascinating fact about the Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio grape varieties is that, although quite rarely, they produce wines that are the opposite color of what they are commonly known for.

Rosé Wine

Rosé Pinot Noir wines are produced in a method similar to the production of Pinot Noir red wines, and can only be made from black grapes.

The grapes are crushed and the grape skins are left in contact with the wine must for a shorter period of time, in order to achieve the pink color. Once the color is achieved, the grape skins are removed to prevent the color from going red.

Rosé Pinot Noirs are typically very light in color and body, due to the delicate nature and gentle skin of the Pinot Noir grape.

Sparkling Wine

Sparkling Pinot Noir wines are usually white and rosé, and very rarely red. The process of extracting the color is the same as with white, rosé, and red Pinot Noir.

Red Pinot Noir grapes are crushed, and the juice is fermented with or without contact with the grape skin, depending on the desired color and style of the wine.

To produce the bubbles, there is a secondary fermentation process that takes place in the bottle.

Conclusion

You don’t have to search high and low to enjoy a delicious bottle of Pinot Noir. You don’t even need to spend hundreds of dollars to get your hands on a great one. With a little know-how, you can find a plethora of affordable and tasty options. In fact, even your neighborhood grocery store, like Trader Joe’s, has a huge selection of Pinot Noir for you to choose from.

Pinot Noir is considered as the most difficult grape variety to cultivate, despite this it is grown in many wine regions around the world, and the fine wine it produces is worth every effort.

The thin skin of the Pinot noir grape makes it highly vulnerable to environmental factors such as frost and heat, pests, and diseases.

When it comes to climate, the delicate nature of the grape makes it very picky about the region where it is grown. The ideal climate for growing Pinot Noir would be short and moderately warm summers and mild winters.

The soil for growing the vines has to be well-drained and rich with nutrients in order to deliver their best fruits.

Table of Contents

1.
One of the most interesting facts about Pinot Noir wine is that the region where the grapes are grown plays a huge role in the final taste of the wine.

While Old World Pinot Noir wines such as France or Italy will develop more elegant aromas, earthy flavors, and minerality, New World grown Pinot Noirs tend to be less acidic, more fruit-forward, and higher in alcohol content.

1. Burgundy

Burgundy is the most romantic part of France by far and apart from picturesque locations it also offers one of the best regions for growing Pinot Noir in the world.

Although besides Pinot Noir, there are a few other red grape varieties that thrive in Burgundy, when it comes to Red Burgundy, Pinot Noir carries the title.

Burgundy is the home of the Pinot Noir grape, with cultivation dating as far back as the 1st century AD. (1)

The cool balanced climate provides the perfect opportunity for the grape to ripen evenly, which results in elegant wines with amazing clean flavors of earth, spice, and red cherry.

Burgundy produces high in acidity complex red wines which have the ability to age sometimes for more than 20 years.

The most important Pinot Noir regions in Burgundy to mention are:

CÔTE DE NUITS

CÔTE DE BEAUNE

CÔTE CHALONNAISE

2. Oregon

The lack of sunlight, the cool climate, and the heavy rains result in Oregon having almost the same climate as Burgundy.

Willamette Valley is the most important region in Oregon for producing Pinot Noir, and along with Burgundy, the home of some of the best Pinot Noir wines in the world.

Almost 2/3 of the country’s wine production comes from the Willamette Valley, and when it comes to Oregon Pinot Noir, we are definitely talking about Willamette Valley.

The most important sub-regions within Willamette Valley are:

CHEHALEM MOUNTAINS

DUNDEE HILLS

EOLA-AMITY HILLS

Although they are New World Pinot Noir, Oregon wines are very elegant on the palate, with silky tannins, gentle fruit flavors, and low alcohol content, and they can certainly hold their own to their Old World counterparts.

3. California

Almost every red grape variety is grown in California with nearly 3500 wine producers. After Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir is one of the major grapes grown in California.

Although California is warmer, the grape enjoys the cold Pacific breeze and the morning fog.

Californian Pinot Noirs tend to be slightly stronger in body, less acidic, and with more intense flavors than the Old World and Oregon Pinot Noirs.

The most important regions for growing Pinot Noir grapes are:

Sonoma Coast

Russian River Valley

Carneros

Sta Rita Hills

Santa Lucia Highlands

Arroyo Grande Valley

Santa Ynez Valley

Santa Maria Valley

4. New Zealand

New Zealand as a wine country owes its popularity primarily to the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes.

New Zealand Pinot Noirs are bright, fruit-forward, with balanced acidity and gentle tannins.

Along with Oregon, New Zealand has some of the coolest climate wine regions for growing Pinot Noir in the New World. The most important to mention are:

Central Otago

Marlborough

Martinborough

5. Australia

Pinot Noir is having a spike in popularity in Australia, with it being the 4th major red grape grown, after Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Pinot Noir is grown in the cooler parts of Australia, with the 4 major regions as follows:

Yarra Valley

Tasmania

Adelaide Hills

Mornington Peninsula

Australian Pinot Noir wines are elegant and well-structured, with expressed fruity notes of dark cherry and red berries.

6. Germany

In Germany, Pinot Noir is called “Spatburgunder” and it was brought to the country from Burgundy, as the name suggests.

Germany is the 3rd largest producer of Pinot Noir in the world. German Pinot Noirs are very light in body and tannins, with a pale color and supple fruit flavors.

Its primary Pinot Noir regions are:

Baden

Württemberg

Ahr Valley

7. Italy

“Pinot Nero” as is the name of Pinot Noir in Italy, is grown throughout the whole country, but the regions with the most Pinot Noir vineyards are:

Trentino-Alto Adige

Veneto

Lombardy

The Alto Adige region deserves the most attention, as the grapes thrive in the high foothills of the Alps, enjoying the cool mountain breeze and bright sunlight.

Pino Nero from Italy is a delicate and refined wine, with pleasant minerality, earth, spice, and fruity flavors.

8. Chile

Chile is one of the newest Pinot Noir producers and gaining popularity pretty fast.

The Pinot Noir vineyards are mostly situated in the north of the country, where the climate is significantly cooler than the south, with foggy mornings and sunny afternoons. The most important regions are:

Leyda Valley

Casablanca Valley

Chilean Pinot Noirs are typically medium-bodied, with moderate acidity and tannins, and well-expressed fruity flavors.

9. Loire Valley, France

Although Pinot Noir is not the major grape variety of the Loire Valley region (this being Cabernet Franc), it is the only grape that makes red Sancerre.

Besides Sancerre, Pinot Noir is used as a blending grape in Loire reds, rosés and sparkling wines.

Pinot Noir from the Loire region is well-known for its minerality and fruity profile.

10. Champagne, France

Yes, that’s right. Along with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir is one of the main grapes that produce the most famous sparkling wine in the world.

A bottle of Blanc de Noir Champagne will always be made of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier red grapes, despite its white color.

11. Alsace, France

Pinot Noir is the only red wine from Alsace, and by law, the wine is bottled in a flute narrow bottle just like the white wines from Alsace.

Unlike other French regions, Alsace wines are labeled and named after the grape which produced them.

Conclusion

Pinot Noir is considered to produce some of the finest wines in the world, and a great food companion.

If you are just starting to explore Pinot Noir, go slowly and gently and begin with Oregon, than California and France at the end.

And if you are planning on visiting a Pinot Noir region, Burgundy has some of the most stunning landscapes in the world.

Aging wines is a very old technique that has been practiced all over the world for centuries.

Wines were aged in Ancient Rome with Falernian being the most popular wine at that time. In order to reach their maturity, Falernian wines were aged for more than 15 years and were considered to be at their point of perfection at 25 years old.

The main purpose of cellaring the wine for years is to bring it to perfection; to make it smoother and more enjoyable.

Some wines get better with age, while others completely lose their essence and flavors over the years.

For example, aging red wines with high tannins and acidity is a must, and the opposite applies to the lightest red wines.(1)

How long to age Pinot Noir?

Our recommendation for aging Pinot Noir is 5 years at most. The reason for it is that Pinot Noir is a very fragile red wine with a low tannin content, and storing it for a long time might not benefit the taste of the wine, and instead do the opposite.

Although there are Burgundy Pinot Noirs that can be 10, 15 + years old, the procedure of storing those bottles is under strict surveillance and constant temperature and humidity control.

How to store Pinot Noir

The best way to store a Pinot Noir bottle is to place it in a dark and cool room.

The ideal temperature is between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Placing the bottle in a horizontal position keeps the cork moisturized and prevents the wine from oxidizing.

If you are not planning to age Pinot Noir, it is totally fine to store it in a wine cooler or chill it for 30 minutes before serving it.

How long is Pinot Noir good for after opening?

An opened bottle of Pinot Noir can last anywhere between 3 to 5 days, while heavier reds such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo will stay good for more than a week.

So, if you cannot finish your wine in one sitting, you can safely put the cork back in place, or even better, use a wine stopper.(2)

<p>The post How Long Does Pinot Noir Last?
The calories in wine are determined by the alcohol content and the carbs, which are actually the result of the residual sugar left in the wine after fermentation.

Pinot Noir is a low calorie red wine, even though it’s sugar and ABV can vary drastically. So, let’s break down the facts about the calorie count in Pinot Noir:

How Many Calories Are in a Bottle of Pinot Noir Wine?

There are 125 calories in a glass of Pinot Noir of a 5 fl oz serving size, and 600 calories in a bottle of Pinot Noir, which makes it a low calorie red wine.

Although this can vary depending on the region, it is still one of the lowest calorie red wines.

The 125 calories per glass of Pinot Noir equals 5% of the daily value allowance and it can easily be offset by 20 minutes of walking your dog.(1)

ALCOHOL CONTENT IN PINOT NOIR

The ABV% of Pinot Noir grown in warmer climates, such as California, will be 13.5-15%, while Pinot Noir from cooler climates, such as Burgundy, varies between 12-14%.

New World Pinot Noir, such as California, Australia, and New Zealand, typically has a higher ABV volume than their counterparts in Europe, owing to the warmer climate and winemaking styles.

On average, alcohol contains 7 grams of calories per gram, so the more there is in wine, the higher the calories.

PINOT NOIR CARBS CONTENT PER SERVING

The amount of carbohydrates in Pinot Nor depends on the residual sugar content in the wine naturally left after the fermentation is complete.

There are 3.5 grams of carbs per glass of Pinot Noir (5 fl oz), and 17 grams in a bottle of Pinot Noir.

Dry wine such as Pinot Noir will be much lower in calories than sweet wine such as a dessert Riesling or Port.

PINOT NOIR PROTEIN CONTENT PER SERVING

It might sound strange to some but there is a small amount of protein found in wine. The major source of proteins in wine is the grape and the rest comes from the yeast and bacteria.

A bottle of Pinot Noir has less than 1 gram of protein.

Is Pinot Noir a Low Calorie Red Wine?

Yes, Pinot Noir is a lower calorie red wine, and therefore suitable for any diet including keto. Pinot Noir pairs extremely well with low calorie foods. Feel free to read our article about pairing ideas here.

If your daily diet or the general nutrition advice you follow limits high-calorie foods, having a glass or two of wine a day won’t harm you; quite the opposite, it can have beneficial properties for your health.

Aim for dry wines such as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Syrah, and try to avoid sweet and fortified wines.
